how much does your travel team practice?

What's on your mind?

How much does your team practice? When we started with our team. It was supposed to be 1 day fielding. 1 day batting. friendlies on sun. 1 tourny a month and the first weekend of the month off...... we are now practicing 3 days a week playing sat and sunday. no weekend off..... so thats 5 days a week.... Is that normal? we've only been doing this for a few months and I'm getting burned out.

I agree with Spazsdad, that is a little much. My girls all have hitting lessons, fielding lessons and are practicing in HS as well as playing games in HS. Right now we practice one day a week, play three weekends a month and take one weekend off a month. Some showcase months are very busy and we play 4 weekends straight, however you have to give the girls some time off, otherwise they will get burned out and feel they have no personal life.

DD's team does 2 nights a week of fielding/batting for about 2 hours. Some weeks they do 1 additional night of hitting split into 2 groups for about 45 minutes per group. 1 to 2 playing events a month.(friendlies or tournaments)

We practice 4 hrs most Saturdays and have bp one night a week for 1.5 hrs.
The biggest problem we encounter is some players not doing any work on
their own to reinforce what we teach/practice which impedes their chance of
making significant improvement in their skill sets.

We take a weekend off a month, avoid playing on the holiday weekends and shut
down a significant length of time after summer and during the Xmas holidays to
help reduce inevitable burnout. Then again it seems like their are more teams out
their running tryouts a week or two after the summer tournaments which forces
us to start back up earlier than I would like.

I think here is Socal... practice is extreme.

Team Practice

- 2 Days Week
- Plus Saturday if no games

Lessons

- 1 Day Week for Hitting
- Every other week for fielding

Games

- Sundays (3 games per Sunday)
- Saturday (If not games then practice)

In total; my DD spends 5 days a week on softball and every other week it is 6 days.

Once in a while we will have a weekend off but nothing regularly scheduled.

That's to much practice time to leave.. I have noticed a trend over the years the worse the teams are the more they practice and the top teams practice less.
The worse the coaching,The longer the practice and more of them.
Less the Talent, Longer the practice and more of them.
Just the opposite for the better coaching and better Talent teams.
The irony is no matter how much overtime the lessers put in they will always be the lesser.
As my Grandpa used to say you can run that mule around a track all day everyday and it will never get good enough to beat a thouroughbred.

That's right. hitting lessons every week and fielding lessons every other week. Man your instructors must love you. In our case we use hitting lessons as tune ups and get our fielding lessons at practice. I can see at the younger ages getting different lessons but sometimes it's just a waste of money. Beleive me your instructor will tell you they prefer to see you every week and your spot will go to someone else. Everytime I needed to take my kid to a lesson I just called and asked if they had an opening and bam! we were in.
