Question for stat geeks

One of the team dads took over the stat job on our team this year. This guy is the VP of finance at a fairly large company, so he really gets into numbers. One thing that we noticed this year was that the ratio of our runs scored to runs against, was always very close to our won loss record.
For example if our won loss record was 25-10, (5-1),our runs for and against would be 125-50, (5-1).
I'm just making these numbers up, because I don't have the stats with me right now but you get the picture. It was that way all year.
Anyone else ever notice a similar phenomenon?

Well, I imagine it makes some sense. I'm not a stats guy, but am a bit of a geek. I think your ratio is 5-2 (ie 25/5=5 and 10/5=2 as well as 125/25=5 and 50/25=2). if you will by tight margins, you probably loose more and your win loss record will be tighter. is you win by large margins, you might likely win more and loose less. What might be itneresting is when you fall outside that pattern and may be an under or over rated team. for example, if your team looses a lot of games, but by very tight margins,it may be that you are a sleeper team and have high potential to get your game opened up and begin to win a lot. the reverse being the case as well. if you only win by tight margins, but have been able to win a lot of games, you may be due to hit a run of losses.

Your question intrigued me, so I ran the numbers on an NCAA Div-I conference. Looks to me like only a third to half the teams had a W/L ratio that was close to their RS/RA ratio. Those would be among the teams ranked in the middle of the standings. The best and worst teams had weaker relationships between their ratios.

The chart is drawn from 2008 conference stats comparing the difference between the W/L and RS/RA ratios, the conference champions to the left ( #1). The champ's W/L ratio was 4/1 (400%), and their runs ratio was about 2/1 (200%), so their difference expressed as a percentage was about 200% (400% minus 200%).

If a team had identical ratios, it would score a zero on the scale.
