Crow hop or not to crow hop thatis the question

What's on your mind?

by dodgerblue » Fri Mar 12, 2010 1:51 pm

My DD is being taught by her HS team how to crow hop which she learned in rec ball a long time ago. Her TB team teaches a more effective way to drive off your back leg with your momentum going forward and I'm seeing this method being used more and more. So my DD asked if HS coach if there was a different way other than crow hop and she blew up and is now on the team sh*t list. Any idea's?

Ditto...even most of the blind blues call a pitcher for crowhopping. Why on earth would the HS coach teach that? As much $$$ as I have put into pitching lessons, I'll be da*ned if I will let someone go in there and screw it all up.

Good call Art. Pitching, every umpire from now until eternity will see it or not see it. it will probably get called at the worst time, like at nationals and the winning run comes home. Not good!!
Out field, your on your own.
My 2 cents.

UCLA doesn't teach the crow hop anymore they teach something called the power slide.

Then again they aren't that good

I'm either naïve or spoiled not having to deal with any of those nightmare HS coaches so many of you complain about, but teaching a pitcher to crow hop never even crossed my mind. I believed the OP was talking about outfielders from the git go.
That said.....it depends. While I feel that ALL players should be taught to crow hop on throws from the outfield from the earliest stages, as they get older, it may not be necessary for certain players. Typically the biggest and strongest. I don't think its a one size fits all. Crow hops are probably best for MOST players. For an exceptional few, other methods such as the power slide that Uno mentioned may be better.
But in general, HS ball players should be crow hopping.

  +1 for NU!!

Had to sign in just to laugh with you on that :D

As for blues calling kids for crow hopping in HS ball, from what I've seen so far, I'm not sure if it matters if we're talking about pitching or the outfield, there's a pretty good chance the blues will call it on either position.
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

What your TB coach is teaching her for the outfield is called the drive step. But if she were a pitcher we would call it a re-plant

I am sorry that the coach felt the need to blow up over a simple question.

Yes, with most beginner types, I would teach them to crow hop. If you had another effective way to throw, I wouldn't care if you hopped, jumped and did a cart wheel.

Hopefully, your DD will be able to just play her game and be an awesome outfielder.

Perhaps the coach has a reason that she prefers a crow hop, but to blow up at a player that asks a simple question is unacceptable.

Have your DD keep working on her distance throws. At Uof AZ. the outfielders warm up throwing from left field fence to right field, prior to the games. I like a throwing program called Jaeger Sports. I will see if it mentions crow hop.
