Measured Skills

Questions and Discussions Regarding the College Recruiting process

You will often see in some individual showcase- a group of other skills measured that is somewhat similar to the "NFL Combines" How an important is this part of the showcase. IMHO it depends...... Some coaches truly value these number, some barely look- some never look- things like pitching speed, running speed and catcher POP times can make or break a recruit. The unfortunate thing for many recruits- this may be the first and last time they do any of these. It can often be intimidating and awkward. make sure that your daughter is aware of what is tested at any showcase they are going to attend- let them be at least somewhat familiar with it.

Example: From Pennsbury NFCA

1. Catcher’s Pop Times
Catchers get three opportunities to receive a pitch and throw to second
base. The second baseman must catch the ball for a time to be recorded.
2. Pitcher’s Speeds and Spin Measurement
Pitchers rotate through 10 stations and throw approximately 4 pitches at
each station. The pitches requested are as follows: curve, drop, rise,
screw, fastball/change-up, best pitch and a speed/spin measurement.
3. Body Composition
The athlete’s height, weight, and age will be used to calculate a body
composition number.
4. Muscular Strength
The athlete squeezes a grip dynamometer for 2-3 seconds to get a
measurement of muscular strength.
5. Power
The athlete starts with toes behind a line and jumps forward as far as
possible, landing on both feet.
6. Rotational Power
The athlete takes a batting stance holding a medicine ball in both hands
and tosses it as far forward as possible.

7. Agility
The athlete starts on the clock and runs 5 yards in one direction, changes
direction and runs 10 yards and changes direction again and runs five
more yards. Time is recorded using a stopwatch.
8. Speed
The athlete starts behind a line, sprints 20 yards and the time is recorded
using a stopwatch.
9. Throwing Velocity (Overhand)
The athlete throws overhand into a net and this throw is measured in MPH
using a radar gun.
10. Bat Speed
The athlete hits line drives off a batting tee into a net. The bat speed is
recorded in mph using a swing speed radar gun.
11. Batted Ball Velocity
The athlete hits as described above while a batted ball velocity
measurement is taken with a radar gun.
