Whitworth ends Tufts’ 53-game winning streak

Everything you want to know about the greatest game

by jonriv » Wed Mar 23, 2016 3:52 am

Madi Perez threw a six-hitter Saturday as Whitworth ended three-time defending national champion Tufts University’s 53-game winning streak with a 6-0 triumph at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

The Jumbos, who were opening their season, finished 51-0 last season while winning their third consecutive Division III softball championship.

Perez (4-3) struck out five and walked none while outpitching Erica County, who went 15-0 last season.

Morgan Portlock started and capped a six-run second inning for the Pirates (12-3). Portlock and Tessa Matthews started the inning with back-to-back doubles. Portlock added a two-run single to end the outburst.

Michelle Silva had an RBI single during the inning and scored on Shannon Wessel’s triple to right field.

That's an impressive streak, no matter what sport or what level of competition.

How bad is D3 competition when a team can go on a 53 game win streak and go unchallenged with 3 national titles in a row?

Lots of teams in all divisions and sports have streaks-

Tufts was dominant for the usual reasons- strong pitching, great coach, strong hitting and success that helps in the recruiting process. Tufts played a tough schedule that included the NESCAC and NEWMAC teams(one of the few losses they ha over the past few years was to my daughter's team) They played a tough schedule and took on all comers. My daughter saw them as a tough competitor that she and her teammates respected a lot,

I'll agree with Spaz on this one. Looks like a thinly veiled an ill-conceived effort on ATWT's part to slam DIII yet again.

Who's your daddy, ATWT?

Hint: Answer begins with a "J" and ends with a "v"

P.S. Was that Wooden coached UCLA basketball team that had an 88 game winning streak and 4 national championships DIII? ;)

There are many strong D3 teams out there where the competition is strong and the academics and campus life are much better than most if not all D1 schools. They also offer a more diverse academic experience, with many D3 competitors able to engage in a plethora of activities outside their chosen sport.
Tufts had a very strong pitcher that could have played at the highest D1 level. She chose Tufts for the reasons detailed above. She graduated and now the team has to rely on more than a dominant pitcher. That happens to teams at all levels.
