College Softball

After College

Everything you want to know about the greatest game

We always focus on HB with the recruiting process and play in college(all of which is great) but perhaps we might want to focus on what some Softball players have done with the educational oppurtunities that softball allowed them.

As I have mentioned before, my DD and her fellow seniors all had jobs locked up by Christmas break- two at financial firms and another with a large accounting firm. All five from the previous year landed jobs in accountng and marketing.

Some of the other graduating seniors tha i know of:

chemical engineering
graduate studies for physical therapy
financial analyst for large bank
teacher

I am still trying to find out on some others

What really struck me was that of the 20 or so girls my DD played with or against in HS/TB more than half did not play the whole four years.

I am curious what other people are seeing? Particularly interested in students who majored in Nursing or the Hard Sciences(two subjects discussed a lot. I think it is important that students(and parents) understand that Softball can be a great stepping stone and we should celebrate the suucesses off the field too.

DD has had several teammates who are in nursing and one graduated this year with dd. I'd guess in the softball program, 4 other girls are in nursing. The senior year can be a major challenge as student athletes are doing their practicums in some nursing setting. Our coach has found a way to make it work.

Per the players that dd played with and against who went on to play collegiate softball, maybe half did not make it four years. DD was fortunate in that 7 seniors went through their careers together and didn't lose anyone from their class.

My dd intends to be a teacher. She will have to wrap up student teaching in the fall. She will substitute in the school district she student teaches in after her student teaching is done. Then, she will try to find a teaching job. She has been an Academic All American and so, her playing and academic resume is stacked full of honors and hopefully that will help get her a job.

My 24 year old , I called her DD1 over the years. And , like you said JR, she also didnt play 4 full years. She played her first year at A&M, got 2nd team Big 12, played part of her second year, and then came home during the spring to be with her mom who had some major medical issues. Because of the way she withdrew, she owed A&M some serious money , so she spent the next 15 months substituting at the local schools, she worked nights at a hitting academy and on weekends worked at a day care - she did it long enough to pay back what she owed. The great thing is she found out how much she enjoyed teaching and coaching, and had an awesome mentor, her aunt, my brother's wife, whom she has always looked up to.

When her sister, DD2, accepted a scholarship at Houston Baptist , the coaches there offered lauren a scholarship to come back to college and play alongside her sister. She and her sister played side by side for two years at HBU. She just graduated in May, and today just got news that she passed the first of her teaching certifications. She has a job at a hitting academy in Austin, starting in about three weeks, when she returns from a trip to Germany and France. She is very excited to teach and coach. I was very happy to get the call from her today about passing the first cert, she sounded about a foot off the ground. Her mom and I plan to be there for her first day of being a teacher.

Donnie, you and your wife raised great kids. I am sure you are very proud of them. No doubt they will be winners in life, doing great so far.

Like all of yall are, I am very proud of my girls. The interesting thing is that virtually all of my friends who are high school coaches, are like "tell them NO NO NO - stay out of high school coaching - too much parents - too much politics." I have said just barely enough to keep me legal saying ' hey, I told you so.' Again, like all of yall, we raised em, hopefully right and they will make the right decisions. And if they dont, they are all smart enough to learn from their mistakes. 8-)

...and hopefully the mistakes that they've seen made by other high school coaches. It's nice to see good people becoming the leader of the next generation. That is a huge plus for all. Congrats to you and yours Donnie.

DD played 4 years, mostly catcher with knee saving playing time at third...she just graduated. Degree in Biology. She wants to be a nurse practitioner. She is missing a couple courses and is taking them on-line with Johns Hopkins. To get into an NP masters program you must have 2 years of hands on, practical experience, not a trivial task. She will be studying for the GRE while completing her Johns Hopkins courses. She just landed a medical research assistant job at the local (and very, very well respected) university hospital. So that should help with the practical experience. Overall, it's going well and there are bumps in the road but they are being dealt with one at a time. We have a plan, subject to change, but a plan. I am, obviously, proud of her....

enjoy,
