I know of only one team in Nor Cal where the coach stays in 12U and coaches that age year after year - don't know Ms. Norwood but she must be part saint. So, if a 12U kid doesn't make her team, she should learn to play chess? 12 U is, I think, where most girls graduate from rec ball to travel ball. This whole "do you homework / research" thing is just not realistic when you join that first team. It is also not realistic to have a clue where your DD fits in for a year or two. How does she compare athletically, motivationally, competitively. That stuff takes some time to figure out. Having two DDs playing college ball it was very trial and error for the first couple of years.
How the F are you supposed to figure out if you are an A ball studette or a B ball also-ran if you don't go out there and play with somebody? You go to a couple of try outs, you do your best to make what you think is the best decision for a place for your DD and you see what happens. Unless the OP's first choice is a complete horror show I'm not sure cutting bait is necessarily the best thing to do - it may be. Now mom & dad have to, probably literally, take notes on all the teams they play, cruise the park, watch the other teams' warm ups, chat up the parents, watch the girls and the coaches during the games and hopefully find a better situation during the next round of tryouts.
Respect the game? Dilute the talent? The 12Us are frickin' 10, 11 and 12 years old. Please. That concentration of talent sorts itself out quite nicely by the time 16's and 18's rolls around. Let the girls play, the dads coach and figure out where they fit in.

I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words.
