IMO
Too many Black leaders (Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton) use and perpetuate racism for their own power and gain, They have done more harm for their communities than good(if any)
Many things that black community(sorry if I paint too broad a brush) to attain self identity. Africanized names, dress, language etc... have done more to alienate the community from the country as a whole and have made them seem more theatening. It has also lead to some of the issues
Focusing on the Police(instead of the real issue) of Black on Black crime has also been an issue
I would also agree that some affirmative action programs(although well intended) were executed so poorly that they put a stigma on all(including those that actually earned their positions)
I also believe that many in the black community(spurred by the before mentioned "leaders" use racism as an excuse or crutch, instead just a hurdle that they need to adapt to and overcome. The victim complex does not help
Having said that, to deny that there is not still broad racism against blacks in this country is naive. Much of it is below the surface and it is certainly much, much better than 40-50 years ago, but it is their never the less. The statistics don't lie. Much of it is unintended. I think it is imperative for all of us to fight any kind of racism whenever we see it.
Diversity is probably one of those things that gets bandied about and misused to often. The diversity of all of us is what makes us strong, but it is our homogenous society that makes us exceptional. Had a German family that rented a house from us, they had a Winnabago that they drove their family around for vacation(to get the full American experience) He said the one of the great things about the US was that you can drive thousands of miles and people still speak the same language and are basically the same-something we all take for granted
