At 5A, I have found that the level of play is generally pretty decent. With the top 20 or so schools in the area, the level of play is real good.
I have noticed that pitching and catching, especially with the smaller schools can be a real problem. After watching a kid who obviously just picked up pitching a week or so ago throw 4 balls back to the screen to walk a batter, then to have that runner score on the next 3 consecutive pitches back to the screen and repeat that process 17 or 18 more times in that inning, well, you just want to gouge your own eyes out.
I've seen this kind of pitcher at a few 5A schools, some 4A schools and a number of 3A schools. You don't need a bat, you need a tennis racket. Collectively we parents who did a year in 3A decided that we would rather do 5 rounds with Tyson than repeat another year of the same. The kids didn't like taking endless walks either. The game is more fun for all if you are able to hit the ball or at least get a chance to strike out.
This is the weakness in HS ball. If a healthy pitcher or catcher doesn't happen to live in your ISD over a 4 year age range, it will be a long season. Travel ball types get to go out and recruit help from wherever if needed.
I really do enjoy competative HS softball, 5A to 1A and I'm looking forward to the season starting
