TRYOUT - ALREADY???

by fanof2 » Sat May 17, 2014 6:03 am

Is it just me, or is it pretty tacky to be posting for next years' tryouts already when the spring season has just started? That's like telling the girls on your team, "I am not satisfied with my current roster, so I am going to start looking to change things up for next year"

Tryouts aren't always because you're looking to replace girls for the following year. Some are looking for players to fill in for open spots now. Some teams may lose a player, have injuries to replace or just need an extra body right away.
So a tryout in mid season is not always what you may think.

I'm talking about the postings for tryouts for next season, not the ones looking to finish out the roster or fill a roster due to injury otherwise. They are actually starting to post for 2014-2015 season. They seem to get earlier and earlier, but seeing several teams already posting for 2014-2015 season tryouts seems way earlier than I would have expected.

Agreed. Not to mention this is nothing new (so it's unsure as to why someone is offended by this now). If you plan on playing on or are currently playing for a premier travel team/organization they will host tryouts every single year. Even the teams who choose to play "B" will most likely do the same thing. You can no longer hand out positions because the player was on the team last year. Girls will have to compete and earn their roster position every year. States like California have been doing this for how long? that is why they continue to be ahead of the curve.

Actually, the top teams/orgs in SoCal don't have open tryouts when you get up to 14+. Most know the players they want and recruit them. If they do hold a tryout, they usually screen the players that are allowed them to try out.

Exactly. But there is still a "tryout" no one is handed a position. And while other states like them are recruiting players, if you do that in Indiana everyone gets all huffy puffy about it. Reality is, it will happen regardless of how parents and/or other coaches feel about it. The game is changing so quickly and the Midwest is doing their best to catch-up.

I doubt the top teams are running elite players through a tryout. Those players are evaluated by their play over several years rather than what they would do in a tryout. They're more likely to include them in a team workout so the player can determine whether the team is a good fit or not.
