12yr old pitcher w/upper arm/shoulder pain

by Ninesdad » Mon Nov 25, 2013 7:22 am

In need of a shoulder specialist in Central Indiana.......My DD has been pithching fastpitch for about 3 yrs and in the last month or so has been complaining of some mild upper arm/shoulder pain. I attributed it to not getting completely loose before she tries to throw hard. Many repeated warnings about this but, after all, she knows exactly what is best when it comes to her arm!!(Did I mention that she was 12? And like many her age, Dad doesn't know squat!!!)
She threw an indoor league game last Wed. with good success and no pain. On Thursday, we went to throw and on about the 3rd warm up snap, she winched in pain, saying that she felt pain shoot down her arm and into her ring and pinky finger of throwing hand. Says it hurts just below the shoulder, in the upper arm area. Our family doc will not be our best course of action. We need her to see a specialist but are unfamilar with any that have good experience with fastpitch pitchers.
Any one in Central Indiana area with a recommendation for us?
Thx in advance,
Concerned Dad

Dr. Wilson has been my knee doctor for more than 10 years. Great doctor.

ninesdad,
Can you give us and update on what you found out? I hope she's feeling better.

Comegetsome,
After we rested her for 2 weeks with no throwing at all, over or underhanded, pain became constant and we took her to see Dr. Mark Booher in Avon. He is involved with Hendricks Regional Health Sports Medicine.
ain became all the time, x rays and determined there is possibly something wrong with the growth plate that is between top of arm bone and shoulder. She was ordered into a sling for 4-6 weeks and we will go from there. After, imobilzing for that period of time, we will start with some range of motion exercises. If it continues to hurt at that time, we will proceed with an MRI to determine exactly what is wrong. Dr. Booher seemed optimistic that we can resolve this with out the need to operate but there is still a chance that could happen. We are praying and keeping our fingers crossed.
Thx,

Ninesdad,

Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully it's nothing too serious and things can get back to normal asap.

Not sure if this will help but I feel compelled to share. back in late spring earlier this year my kid started to complain of shoulder and shoulder blade pain (from pitching). She's 13. Long story short I started looking at her pitching mechanics much more closely and noticed a few subtle "issues". Then I recorded her pitching and watched it in slow motion to see what was really going on and my eyes were definitely opened.

Long story short, she was pushing the ball...literally leaning forward and pulling the ball forward...which put all the stress on her shoulder. We went to a pitching coach who specialized in our issue, and she showed my kid 4 surgery scars she had from 4 different surgeries on arm, elbow, and shoulder from doing the exact same thing wrong.

Later this fall I was at a showcase event watching pitchers pitch, warmup, etc. Very honestly greater than 50% of them were throwing wrong (as I briefly described above). I feel like we were lucky and we caught it early. it took 6 months to fix, but its correct now and her speed is back, etc. etc. My point is....and I am not minimizing any medical diagnosis....but look at and even record her pitching....and I'll bet you there is at least one mechanical issue in play.

My kid started out with one main issues which led into 3-4 additional compensating issues (the body tries to compensate with other mistakes in order to keep the body in balance). I hope I am wrong, but I'd definitely recommend this approach if for no other reason than to be sure she is right mechanically.

My son had same issue in early Fall. Pop in shoulder at baseball camp bad pain after. Took to Bloomington Bone and Joint and Dr. Doster said growth plate crack and x-ray confirmed. Dr said: immobilize for 3wks, light movements for 3 more wks, and then be good to go, but ease back. He was exactly right!! Back to normal in 7wks. Said very commen in teenagers who growing rapidly. She should be fine after 6wks, just don't do too much too early when released.

Thx Nick,
We saw ur wife at SZ a couple weeks ago and she said exact same thing.
I'm hopeing that she will continue to follow directions and take it slowly. But knowing someone who had exact same problem should help her understand how to go forward and that if she does what doc prescribes, that she can be back out there to continue to develop.
I ll let her read ur post.
Thx again everyone for ur help and concern,
Ninesdad
