High Schoolers

Are High Schoolers allowed to play travel ball on Sundays in California? And Can anybody point me to the CIF rule that speaks to this?

I heard from an umpire today that they can not stop them from playing on Sundays. That's why I ask.

Some sections are allowed to practice with their teams. On Sunday's. A few like San Diego can have no contact at all. However no high school players can play in a game setting, tournament or scrimmage with their travel ball teams after the dark period begins. Sure they can't stop you but if you are caught you will disqualify your high school from competing in CIF and nullify any league wins that occurred after the player participated in a travel ball game.

Thanks Spaz and Rebel. That makes sense. I mean why would high schoolers go dark if they could still play on Sundays. I just thought I would look further into it after hearing the opposite from an umpire. If he were right it sure could change the dynamic of older levels of TB in spring.

While waiting for responses I did a Google search and found the 2016-2017 southern section CIF rule book. In the past my internet searches were tedious and sometimes fruitless. Today I got q uicker results.

By law 600.F (124) allows spontaneous recreational participation
The other exceptions are bylaws 602,603&604 (pages 125,126)
Allow Pan American or Olympic participation, and even participation in an Olympic Development program that is recognized by CIF as such.

Good to know that Olympic exposure won't go to waste during the HS season.

LOL.

But it sounds like these are programs involving athletes that are already chosen.

And don't forget that this part of the rule book addresses all of CIF not merely softball.

FTFY since you conflated 2 different things:

- Southern Section's Article 60 is almost entirely in bold indicating those portions are same as CIF's statewide Article 60, however other CIF Sections have added restrictions (e.g. San Diego http://www.cifsds.org/uploads/2/3/3/6/23368454/greenbook_2016-17__1_.pdf).

- CIF Articles 1-120 are general rules across all sports (with noted sport-specific exceptions) and most sport-specific rules are in a sport-specific article after that.

The umpire is technically correct, however CIF can make them ineligible for HS competition.

I can't think of a rule or law that stops anyone from doing something - they only establish consequences if you're caught.

Wow. San Diego is a lot more restrictive. But they do allow two College ID camps (once you've obtained the proper approvals). I don't remember seeing that in the general southern section. I may have missed it though.
