Catching Coach who do you recommend

by 06Dad » Tue Apr 26, 2016 3:14 pm

Looking for a catching coach for my 9 yr old daughter. She has been doing group lessons for about a year but we are looking for someone that does 1 on 1 lessons. The closer to Anaheim the better. Any recommendations? Thanks

Melissa Roth, two time All American, Team USA and also played professionally for USSSA Pride. I'll put her numbers against anyone in SoCal or the country. Numbers don't lie.

Depends on which "numbers" you're talking about - playing stats or successful students. The latter are more important when looking for an instructor.

Both are important when looking for an instructor...also student to instructor ratio. But more importantly if it's a good fit with the player.

Being a great player doesn't mean they've learned how to be a good coach or instructor. Naturally gifted players are typically the worst because they often don't know why they're so good. Players that had to learn how to play great are better prepared, however they mainly know what they had to overcome and what they did to improve.

Many/most former players can run students through the drills they used and not add much value beyond that. Real instructors learned over time to recognize what students are doing right/wrong and how to help them improve.

My Daughter has been going to Jen Schroeder for 5 years and I wouldn't change a thing. My Daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the beginning of her freshman year. She is now a Senior graduating next month and will be heading to Idaho state on a scholarship. Without Jens constant pushing my daughter to understand her body and training after being diagnosed she would have never reached her goal. Jen stood by my daughter pushing her helping her instructing her to be the catcher she is today. Its not always about the Stats or where they played its about understanding what each girl needs to achieve her goals and thats what Jen brings to the table. I hope this helps in your decision.. Plus her dad Mike is an awesome hitting instructor and was also instrumental in helping my daughter.
