So Cal 14u Poll (UPDATED 6/21)

by Bracky Apprentice » Thu May 16, 2013 2:07 pm

Here are a few updates on qualified teams. The rankings remain from the last updated rankings based on ballots submitted by pollsters.

Comments have been updated as well.

1. Firecrackers-Brashear
Qualified: PGF: Yes (So Cal) , ASA: No
Comments: A near unanimous # 1. Big bats … strong defense. Lost to McNee in Col. Sparkler TV exhibition showcase game, but won the Sparkler tourney defeating TN Elite, twice.

2. Team Mizuno-Campbell
Qualified: PGF: Yes (invite) , ASA: No
Comments: Injured players appear to be back, …have added a few big bats recently. Great showing at 2 Surf City tourneys in 16u. Are a couple of surprising losses at Champions Cup cause for concern going into PGF?

3. OC Batbusters-McNee
Qualified: PGF: Yes (return berth) , ASA: No
Comments: Large roster, … how do you keep that many players happy. Played only 10 of their large roster in a televised exhibition showcase game in Colorado, but defeated #1 FC, before losing to TN Elite in semi-finals.

4. Firecrackers-Rice
Qualified: PGF: Yes (So Cal) ASA: Yes (16u)
Comments: Qualified with a strong run through the losers bracket at So Cal qualifier. Attending both PGF 14u and ASA 16u nationals. Good showing in 16u Champions Cup to finish in second place.

5. Team Mizuno-Briggs
Qualified: PGF: Yes (AZ qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Still a bit up and down at times, but expect them to continue getting better and more consistent. Best all around of the 99 teams …good pitching. Getting more consistent, and won Champions Cup 14u division.

6. Corona Angels-Perez
Qualified: PGF: Yes (So Cal) ASA: No
Comments: Still see this as the best of the Corona Angels teams. Got on a roll since Aprils Finest. A couple big losses at Champions Cup may be cause for concern.

7. So Cal Choppers-Shipman
Qualified: PGF: Yes (invite) , ASA: No
Comments: Good hitting, … not so good defense. A couple of recent good showings, taking 2nd place at Batbusters BOTW 16u and a good showing in Lousiville Slugger Independence Day 16u in Colorado. This team may now be primed for a run at PGF.

8. So Cal Athletics-Quarles
Qualified: PGF: Yes (invite) , ASA: No
Comments: Lost some players, … good bats, ... need pitching.

9. OC Batbusters-Ybarra/McGowan
Qualified: PGF: Yes (New Mexico qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Good hitters, … pitching is shaky.

10. San Diego Power Surge 99
Qualified: PGF: Yes (invite) , ASA: Yes (return berth)
Comments: Beyond #1, pitching questionable, and that was confirmed at Champions Cup with a tough win over Mizuno-Campbell, but big losses to lesser teams.

11. Firecrackers-Contreras
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments: Lost #1 pitcher to Choppers-Shipman. Did not qualify.

12. Firecrackers-Roman
Qualified: PGF: Yes (Las Vegas qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Inconsistent at times, … defense may be an issue. Did what they had to to qualify for PGF, but may need to add a few missing pieces.

13. Team Mizuno-Granado
Qualified: PGF: Yes (New Mexico qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Team is inconsistent, .. defense not so good.

14. Corona Angels-Martinez
Qualified: PGF: Yes (invite) , ASA: No
Comments: Where have they been? … not sure they could qualify for PGF if they didn’t have invite …

15. So Cal Pumas Black
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments: Did not qualify.

16. Batbusters-Graft
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments: Did not qualify.

17. So Cal Athletics-Natvidad
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments: Did not qualify.

18. OC Impact
Qualified: PGF: Yes (post-qualifier invite) , ASA: No
Comments: Showed the ability to string together some wins at So Cal qualifier, received post-qualifier season invite after 3 attempts to qualify.

19. Team Mizuno-Young
Qualified: PGF: Yes (Nor Cal qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Third time is a charm to qualify for PGF.

20. So Cal Choppers-Castillo
Qualified: PGF: Yes (N.Tx) , ASA: No
Comments:

21. Cal Cruisers-Sievers
Qualified: PGF: Yes (AZ qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments:

22. So Cal Breakers-Williams
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments:

23. So Cal Jets
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: Yes
Comments: ASA State champs, did not qualify for PGF in Nor Cal.

24. Corona Eliminators
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments: Somehow find a way to win tough games, including a few in Colorado.

25. Cal A’s 99
Qualified: PGF: No, ASA: No
Comments:

xx. Cal Thunder
Qualified: PGF: Yes (invite) , ASA: Yes
Comments: Concerned about their ability to compete at PGF after ASA states result.

xx. American Pastime 98-Garcia
Qualified: PGF: Yes (Nor Cal qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Seem to win some big games, then lose to lesser teams, but going to PGF nonetheless.

xx. Corona Angels-Barroso
Qualified: PGF: Yes (Oregon qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Found a way to qualify, but may need to add some more talent to compete at PGF.

xx. USA Athletics-Catania
Qualified: PGF: Yes (Las Vegas qualifier) , ASA: Yes (Intensity NQ)
Comments: Kind of came out of nowhere to surprise a few teams and earn berths to both PGF and ASA.

xx. So Cal Athletics-Mercado
Qualified: PGF: Yes (Las Vegas qualifier) , ASA: No
Comments: Won some tough games in Vegas, including a win over their sister team Natvidad, to put themselves in position for a berth.

Firecrackers-Davis
Firecrackers-Lutterloh

Im not certain if this answers the question, but the OP says "Rankings are merely a first opinion based on observed play ...." So I would think that it is merely B/A opinion, and I havent seen any posts with ballots to take a poll of bucketeers. As I recall, that may have been how the Bracketologist' rankings initially started (one person's opinion), and later moved to ballots that coaches/fans got the chance to submit.
