Likely already asked and answered on this forum, but I couldn't find the thread.

Who's on 2nd:

ASA rules:
Bottom 7th inning, tie game.
Batter 1 single.
Batter 2 and 3 out. Batter 4. 1-1 count.
Batter 1 caught stealing for 3rd out.

Start bottom 8th inning:
Batter 4 up again.
who's placed at 2nd base, Batter 1 who was the last out in the 7th, or batter 3 who was the last batter out and furthest in the upcoming line-up from Batter 4?

The runner placed on second is the player scheduled to bat last in the lineup in regard to the hitter who leads off the inning.

As McGee said, but can also be a legal substitute for that player or if the player to be placed at 2nd happens to be the pitcher or catcher can also be a legal courtesy runner for either.
