Catch Appeal

Rule question? Get it answered here.

ASA R1 at 1B no outs
low liner to LF, LF makes shoestring catch. BU rules no catch.
LF thinking she made the catch throws to F1 as R1 now on 2B and BR on 1B. BU gives safe sign.
DC calls time and asks BU if PU had a better view and saw catch.
PU rules catch, BR out.
Is R1 out since LF threw to F1?
Is R1 out if DC appeals saying she left early?
Is R1 put back to 1B?

If the BU went out on the ball, that's his call. There isn't an appeal to PU.

However, based on what is offered:
Is R1 out since LF threw to F1?

How does the pitcher getting the ball retire R1?

Is R1 out if DC appeals saying she left early?

No, the DC is not authorized to make the appeal. Assuming an infielder, pitcher or catcher made the appeal, the runner shouldn't be out since the umpire's erroneous call placed the runner in jeopardy.

Is R1 put back to 1B?

That would be the appropriate action.

Setting aside whose call it is and the mechanics of reversing the call....

I think the resolution would depend on the initial actions of R1. If she was running on contact, thinking that it was a base hit, I may let the double play stand as that may have been the likely outcome of the play. If R1 was hesitating waiting to see if the ball was caught, then ran when the BU signaled/called no catch, then I would support placing her back at first with one out.

I would not accept an appeal for R1 leaving early if R1 was off the bag, then ran when no catch was ruled. That is a good example of a reversal of an umpires call placing a player in jeopardy.
