Hands

Rule question? Get it answered here.

by K'SDAD » Fri May 02, 2008 12:12 am

I know ASA states the hands are not part of the bat. My question is, are the hands considered part of the bat in any association? Say Dizzy Dean softball? Also had it come up at my sons baseball game. In both instances the blue called fair ball, hands are part of the bat. Thanks for all input.

Hands are part of the batter in EVERY baseball, and softball league (except maybe sandlot/backyard ball).

No bats have hands, so they gotta go with the batter.

The blues at your son's game were wrong.

Hands are not part of the bat in any league, no matter how expensive the bat, up to and including the Yemeni Slayer of the Infidel Softball League, where they may chop of your hands.. but they still dont become part of the bat.

I was told by head umpire that if a coach can go to a store and buy a bat with hands attached from they would be considered part of the bat... and unless they come from the factory that way the bat is illegal....ump has a sense of humor

Yeah that's one way to explain it, but if a bat comes onto my field with attached hands, I'm gonna rule that an illegal bat!

Hands are not on the approved attachment list!

Some umpires or coaches or parents or even players may need a good visual explanation.

Ask them to pick up a bat and then drop it. Wherever the hands end up is what they are part of!

Haven't we already established elsewhere that a) their rules are far too demanding, and b) since they don't pay mileage no one will be going there anyway?

So it's ruled a strike, not a foul ball.... correct? :P

Its the same criteria as with any other hit by pitch

It is always a dead ball.. then

Was the batter swinging?
Was the hands in the strike zone?
Did it hit the bat first and then the hands while she is in the box?

etc

In other words the rules are no different from any other hit by pitch. Exactly the same.
