Can you use a courtesy runner for the pitcher or catcher and then use that same runner in the same inning as a substitution for another player?

Speaking ASA

Yes, but not in the same half of the inning in which the player was used as a courtesy runner.

MTR, the question in the OP was about using a CR as a sub runner "in the same inning." Therefore, umpinva had the correct answer when he said "no."

No the question was, can you use that same runner in the same inning as a substitution for another player? The answer is yes but not in the same half inning.

The answer to the question is yes. If a player is used as a CR in the top half of the 1st inning, that same player may be used as a substitute in the bottom half of the 1st inning. Rule 8.10.D clearly states that. There is also an exception should there be an injury to a player and a substitute needed.

I stand corrected. Still, upon reading the word "use that same runner" as a substitute makes me think of using the player as an offensive substitution, since as a defensive substitution they would not be a "runner."
