 Re: Blue, stop coaching
Could it be simply the possibility of a friendly blue trying to connect with the players and coaches by using some constructive feedback and the coach is simply being and oversensitive know-it-all prick? I've known of a few coaches who are that way. Not defending the blue here...never. but ...just asking...

 Re: Blue, stop coaching
Since you ask, I will answer.
I am a very competent coach, and I dont want umpires instructing my players. So I want no part of him trying to do so with my team. That probably would be no big deal if he was doing this with crappy teams, but not with good ones. There is NO GOOD coach that is going to sit back and have a blue call his players out of the dugout so he can start giving them coaching... which is absolutely a NO NO for ALL UMPIRES.
Reverse the situation and let the coach give instructions on how to umpire. What would the response be???

 Re: Blue, stop coaching
Per Skarps hypothetical situation and the like ;
As a Coach, I do not want Blues, opposing coaches, fans, parents ( in most, but not all situations ), boyfriends ( had to boot one from the dugout during a HS game this year, WTF? ), girlfriends ( I had one that was a big distraction this year in HS ball ) or vendors speaking to my players ... BUT, I am not the least bit offended if a Blue sees something that he feels could be a problem, coming up to me and asking me to speak to my player about blaa blaa blaa ... I will give him the courtesy of a listen to and then approach the player if need be ... As a Blue ( in my limited experience at lower levels ) ... I go to the coach and tell him/her ... a few times the coach has then asked me to tell the player what they are doing wrong and I've complied ...

 Re: Blue, stop coaching
Agree completely. If the Blue comes up to me and says....... then I shake my head politely, say Uh Huh... I will let her know and move on. If it is worth mentioning to the player, I will do so. If what he says make sno sense to me, then we move on.
Nice and friendly the way it should be. First example..... No under any circumstance with high level ball.

 Re: Blue, stop coaching
Thanks for the feedback, all. I'm not a fan of blues overstepping either, but, conceptually speaking, it has always been my understanding that they have broad powers to control the game where safety is concerned. I suppose I should pay more attention to the umpire threads on here, but I have found that my eyes glaze over almost instantaneously whenever I start to read them.

Now, I will admit that sometimes, if a coach has been repeatedly using a courtesy runner during the game and if F1 or F2 gets on base and if there is a break in the action, I may (and sometimes have) look over in his direction and may even ask if he wants to put in a courtesy runner. As far as instructing a player, not my job EXCEPT if I have called her for a violation (such as obstruction), but even then I won't instruct her as to what she should do, I will simply tell he what she DID do.

 Re: Blue, stop coaching
I absolutely will not bring up anything about players doing or not doing something. (unless there is an infraction) Never speak to players unless to say "hi" in acknowledgement. I don't chat with the fans or talk to coaches in between innings. It is full on attention to the book and that's it. I have only spoken to a coach about his line-up card for preventive maintenance. If he makes a change that will cause some problems I will ask him if he is sure he wants to do that. Also, If he makes a substitution while on offense I will ask if he has any changes when his team takes the field. In pregame I will go over what a PIA batting out of order is so we are avoiding it. So Cal ASA Umpire - See you in Bloomington, IN if you are there!

Completely agree. In reality, the umpires should really go un-noticed the entire game and only be 'seen' or 'heard' when it is needed.

 Re: Blue, stop coaching
I assume we're talking friendlies and blues probably just trying to be friendly...relax it's a long day. I'm going to try and keep my mouth shut( not real good at that) and try to get on his good side. I've seen and heard plate umps talking to coaches about their pitchers spins and locations in the middle of a game , but just a friendly(practice).
Sharps hypo...I see girls out of position in the infield all the time and could get somebody hurt. My kid would be the first one to run blindly into another player cause she's assuming that other players going to get out of the way.
When I play...if blues not looking we often step into the path of a base runner just enough to break his stride.
