IMO, the top five 14U teams heading into this year share one thing in common. That is a track record of success with basically the same experienced team returning.
1. Stealth. Top pitching that will not be affected by change in distance. Great defense. Offense is a bit inconsistant at times but generally seems to come up big at the right time. Good coaching. Full team back from ASA run last year.
2. Scottsdale Fever 96. Great defense. Good mix of speed and power. Pitching is thin and questionable from 43. Most of team back from last year. Showed well at times but unsuccessfully chased berth. Should have no problem with berth this year. Good coaching, known for trick plays.
3. Desert Thunder 96. This team has been together for the most part for 4 years. Very solid all around. Great championship in Vegas last year. Good coaching. Need one more strong pitcher who can overcome distance change.
4. AZ Cats 96. Again, team has been together for 4 years. Coach has great experience and the team has been very successful in Tucson. If pitching staff remains intact, should be okay there. Offense is inconsistant.
5. Hotshots 96. Most of good team returns. Fantastic patience and plate awareness. Adequate pitching and defense. Experience and good coaching makes this a tough team to beat at any given time. Always seem to plug any hole that develops, which is to coaches' credit.
The absence of meat-whistle's team from my rankings has nothing to do with him. I just have difficulty ranking a new team that hasnt accomplished anything. Based on every post I have seen regarding this team, the coach is responsible for every college player in America, has taken over 100 teams to nationals, has won nationals at least as many times as he has taken a team, has "been there and done that," is "the best of the best," etc. I also know from what I have read that this team has the "best of the best" pitcher and hitter (same kid) in AZ. Even with that all as a fact, nobody knows what else they have. May turn out to be unbeatable. May turn out to be nothing. I just don't see how to project success for an unknown group.
The 97s will need to step up. All five of my top five did it last year as 96s, and some 97 teams will do it this year. I just want to see them do it before giving them credit.
