Electronic correspondence (e.g., text messaging, instant messenger, email) also permissible beginning Sept 1 of junior year.

Best reference is NCAA's Guide for College_Bound Student-Athlete. Those rules are covered under recruiting calendars. NCAA year runs Aug 1 to Jul 31.

Major D-I rule changes affecting showcases are going into effect Aug 1:
- Eliminates 50 evaluation day limit on coaches.
- Greatly reduces days coaches can watch non-scholastic events (i.e. showcases) during school year to 12 days in 6 weekends in the fall and none during the winter and spring. http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2017-18DIREC_SoftballRecruitingCalendar_20170707.pdf

While reading through the rule changes, I noticed that the mid to late November time period is now a Quiet Period for NCAA D1 schools. Unless I am totally wrong on this, my understanding is that D1 coaches cannot attend tournaments/showcases for recruiting purposes during the quiet period but they can still do camps and other on campus activities with prospective recruits or commits?

If this is the case, how will this affect the Surf City Early Thanksgiving Showcase? I am assuming that NCAA D2 and D3 along with NAIA and JUCO's are not affected by the new rules and would be able to send coaches but not having any D1 programs there might make it less attractive for some teams that typically attend.

Hoping someone can clarify things as we head into the Fall season because it seems like the NCAA rules are getting as complicated as the IRS Tax Code.

08-01-16 thru 11-23-16 Contact Period.

The new rule says coaches can only attend on Saturday and Sunday eliminating the Thursday and Friday games that pull kids out of school

Those dates are from last fall's calendar. New D1 calendar has very limited Contact Periods (i.e. Aug 1-13 and Jun 7 - Jul 31) and 2 types of Evaluation Periods, scholastic and non-scholastic.

Again, here's link to new D1 calendar - http://www.ncaa.org/sites/default/files/2017-18DIREC_SoftballRecruitingCalendar_20170707.pdf.

The 6 weekends for 2017 run Oct 14 thru Nov 19. Surf City Early Thanksgiving is Nov 17-19. Quiet Period starts Nov 20.

Thank you very much for the clarification and the link to the NCAA guidelines.

I was browsing around and came across this article which I found pretty interesting:

https://www.nsr-inc.com/scouting-news/divisioni-softball-recruiting-calendar/

After reading the article, I am wondering if the NCAA rule changes will slowly start the pendulum to swing back a little bit in regards to the middle school recruiting and other pressures put on athletes when they are just getting to high school.

I certainly hope that this is the case and NCAA continues to reform their rules. It is pretty sad having to make player profile sheets for young 14U girls with their personal statements saying "I like to watch Disney Channel and I am looking forward to getting my drivers license in three years and oh yeah, I love to play softball."
