And have since changed it back somewhat...at the cost of millions (overall) that most college softball teams cant afford...vs a $50 mask for a few kids?

Sam we can argue this chit (again) for months (again) and still agree to disagree
WTH is the big deal about wearing a mask...what's the 'downside'? Whats written on the con side?

We're seeing more and more high end pitchers wear them...its really not a big deal.

The mask doesnt address the problem.

That's where we differ sambro! If they're not going to change bats and balls then let's protect the kids/pitchers until they're adults. Do u at least agree pitchers are the most vulnerable? U said before nothing was going to happen until someone is killed. Well maybe the mask will help prevent that.

As an 18G pitchers parent I hope the Kentucky mandate spreads. My DD going back to 2nd year 12's had a coach who pushed against wearing the mask. Reasoning... if they hit their spots they shouldn't have an issue. Have seen many a smoked ball right back up the middle despite hitting the desired spot. Also claimed that for his DD at a tryout for a high level team that kids with masks were cut before throwing a pitch based on that factor. Same coach had a daughter/pitcher that stopped pitching after taking a ball up the middle. Crazy in today's world with the loaded bats and balls. My DD doesn't wear a mask and we have had the conversation many times but hard to force the issue when they are at that age and feeling that they need to make their own decisions. Make it mandatory in the college game and it will just be the norm for all of the up and coming travel ball players.

Yes, as far as facial reconstruction surgery requirements it does help...few years ago mine took a hard shot playing 3rd off her heel of her glove playing 3rd ...but she had on a mask so instead of going to hospital she simply straightened her mask up and made the next put out.

She was wearing a Schutt Titanium..Masks do their job in most cases...don't know of any failures.

You still haven't given any reasons to not wear a mask.
It just makes sense.

The point, obviously, is that they shouldn't HAVE to wear them. The problem is easily fixed by changing the ball.

I understand that the easy change won't happen because parents want to think that their DD's can hit. The game has swing to a point where the rules have given every advantage to the hitter: juiced bats, lively balls, protective gear for the batters' limbs, lines for the pitchers' delivery, short fences, battlers don't have to avoid pitches, pitchers plate moved back 3 feet......

Let's just put armor on the pitchers......make it so you can't telll the difference between them and the catchers. That's the ticket.

If it stays this way, eventually, nobody will want to pitch and you'll have to put machines in the circle. We will look back on it then and wonder why nothing was done, especially something that is so simple.

Some folks just refuse to change with the times. Let's go backwards instead of moving forward.

Spend some time and come up with a cogent, real argument. I don't call endangering these young ladies, whom are only 39 feet from the batter at release, "moving forward." I listed a littany of batter advantages instilled over the last few years. Lets roll back half of them. No batter armor, no pitchers' lines, instill the Chevrolet strike zone. That might ensure that we have kids willing to pitch 10 years from now.

I think if they still used those leather helmets from back in the day.. you sure wouldn't have to worry about CTE.. because they would not be launching their bodies into each other with total disregard.
