Bat Sting?

I just bought a new bat for team use, a Synergy Extended. Several of the girls who prefer a long light bat really like, except for one complaint, it stings their hands. I realize that it is made of somewhat different material than the CNT Synergy and the Stealth, but we got to discussing bat sting at practice and couldn't come up with a consensus about the cause and effect.
I've told girls that they aren't swinging hard enough and instead of delivering the blow, they are taking it. Someone said they hear that you aren't hold the bat tight enough, which seems kind of counter-intuititive.

You can buy a rubber piece that fits around their thumb but it takes some getting used to....Works very good though!

I've heard that part of the cause of this is swinging "at" the ball, rather than "through" the ball, but that may be just coach BS trying to get someone to follow through better.

I know my kids usually complain about it more when they hit the ball out near the end of the bat....
