What's on your mind?

UmpSteve is right on the money. It's the bats, plain and simple. I've played slowpitch starting in the early/mid 90's when it was still singlewall aluminum. Alloy technology in those bats started getting better (CU31, C405), allowing them to be made with thinner (read - lighter) walls, giving them more trampoline effect, etc. Then the doublewall Demarini's came out, and changed the game. Then in the early 2000's composites became more mainstream, and the Miken Ultra changed the composite game forever. Fastpitch and Slowpitch bats manufactured to have a better trampoline effect and larger sweetspots which only got better the OLDER and more used the bat was, until it broke. This is when Utrip and ASA had to start to change the testing requirements of bats. It became much easier to just simply change the compression/core of the ball. Some of the old school .525/50 COR balls just would be way too dangerous in today's game.
True, hitters today (softball and baseball) have better swing mechanics, but it's the equipment, otherwise, why would you spend $400 on a composite bat if your mechanics are good enough for a $30 Target bat. Same goes with golf and hockey, their equipment is better because of huge improvements in their technology.
