i had never heard of this before until it happened last week. what are you thoughts on an NCAA D1 softball team quitting during a game and refusing to take the field? is this a big deal or a non-event? does it happen often?

Busch league to me. The NCAA definitely took it seriously:

Two unheard of teams from weak conferences and one not acting like a DI program. Relinquish that team to DII or NAIA.

Was Sam the coach? :D

Seriously- did the coach not have some former pitcher on the roster taht could of taken one for the team. I am sure there are a few ex-pitchers on theroster that could pitch GARBAGE time.

Even us "low-lifes" at DIII have an emergency pitcher :D

Anybody watch that Oregon - Stanford game last weekend? 2 Stanford pitchers had left the program to Oklahoma and LSU and 2 pitchers injured but they sucked it up and if not for a few critical errors that cost them 6 unearned Stanford would have beat the #2 team in the country with a platoon of position players doing the pitching.

Wow what a d!ck move... Take your beating like a man...This guy is a Dr. and the AD? what's he teaching his kids... when life beats you up you walk away?

As the post before me said I am sure they had at least one girl who pitched before... Let the D work it out and then call it a day...

D1? I can think of a few things that D stands for in this case...

Honestly, I do not know a D1 team right now that is running out of gas in their pitching staff. Easy to point at those teams that come up short at this time of the year. That list is longer that it should be. You even see a strong staff like Oregon limiting innings for their number 1. Everyone I know that pitches at D1 level is sore right now.

Time for coaches to start to look at using more pitchers during a season.

Sad when this sort of things happens. A two game suspension was too light.

Although the score is posted as 7-0 for Youngstown all of the player stats are erased. Accomplishments not recognized and ancillary things players may be after and working toward could be affected.

Looks like Coleman is riding #1 pitcher for all NEC games and resting her on non-conference games. Also looks like he's reducing non-conference DHs to single games whenever possible. NCAA rep mentioned he knew YSU wouldn't travel for 1 game, so it appears he tried canceling one of those games too.

- 3/29-30: #1 pitches all 26 innings of 2 NEC DHs.

- 4/01: #2 pitches all 7 innings of game that was originally scheduled as DH. "Partly cloudy, mid 50s, nice"

- 4/10: #2 pitches all 6 innings of game that was originally scheduled as DH. "Mostly cloudy, low 50s"

- 4/12: #1 pitches all 14 innings of NEC DH.

- 4/15: #2 pitches 11 innings of YSU DH where 2nd game was forfeited.

- 4/18-19: #1 pitches first 23 innings of 2 NEC DHs and #2 comes in to pitch last 3 of blowout.

- Today: #2 pitched all 4 innings of run-rule loss that was originally scheduled as DH.

There is a 3rd pitcher listed on the roster, however someone posted on another board she's no longer on the team.
