What Does It Mean To Be ...ATHLETIC?

What's on your mind?

We hear all around us.. "that girl/boy is so athletic"...."he/she is the most athletic of all"...what does really mean being athletic?
When many work together for a goal... great things may be accomplished!!!

Good question....it is one of those things that is hard to put into words but I know it when I see it. If I had to describe athleticism it would be just well balanced, fluid motion. Girls that are athletic just naturally do little things to put their bodies in the best positions to perform athletic tasks.

Throwing and simple running are the two basic athletic functions that I think tell a lot about a girls natural athleticism. I have two daughters, one has a lot more natural athleticism than the other and throwing and running are where it show the most, one is 12, one is 10 and the younger one is throwing as hard as the older one because she just naturally feels how to power a throw with her legs and body, The older one is much taller and her arm motion is good, but she just cannot get the feel of how to build that power from the ground up. We have done a billion drills and it just hasn't clicked, younger one has done it from the first time she picked up a ball.

Running is similar, the little one has a natural body lean forward, runs on the balls of her feet etc. The older one runs more upright and her heels hit pretty hard.

I do think that as they age that some girls get a little boost of athleticism once all the neuromuscular connections develop after physical maturity.

I think it is an overused term. Most top level TB players and collegiate players are athletic to a certain extent, they have to be. I hear the term athletic used a lot on teams with average players where the athletic player stands out. I have also seen many athletic kids with the sharpness of a bowling ball.

I don't think there is one true definition, but after watching a season of Freshman Volleyball where only two of the 15 had ever played before, I could certainly see the ones that weren't "athletic". They had slower reactions to the ball and couldn't really anticipate where the ball was going to go, these same girls would never lay out for the ball either.

Sometimes just by watching a kid run you can see a lot of athleticism.

I saw a kid get offered a full ride, it was to a juco, but still it was a full, based on the coach watching her walk from on deck to home plate. He said, "I know an athlete when I see one."

Everytime I throw my keys to DW from 10 to 30 feet & she reaches out & snatches them I tell her "That's why I married you Honey!" :D

If you don't have hand eye coordination you're not not "athletic" enough to play softball
