Simple rule: Player (girl) first. Everything else second. IMO
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.

Many times we forget it's supposed to be all about the girls. If the girl came to you and she is unhappy with her current situation there is nothing unethical about that. It's also supposed to be a good fit, Isn't it? All your doing is opening the door not pursuing her or encouraging her to leave the team.

I do not believe in "stealing" players from other teams but it pains me that this player is so miserable. Her parents are unsure if it is right to leave a team mid season and I do not want to be that coach, the one who steals players. What are the ethics in this situation? ...

Your conscience should be clear if you haven't done anything to make them unhappy with their current team.

Has the family talked to the coach about their issues? I think it is commendable for the family to be concerned about living up to their commitment for the season, especially if their departure would jeopardize the team's ability to continue. However, they don't have to remain if they make their issues known and the coach refuses to change. At that point, the parting would probably be mutual.

Im with Pdad...
There are so many variables in those choices...True, loyalty is one thing...but sometimes...It just doesn't work out and its time to move on in life. Doesn't always have to be some seemingly life altering event either...
I may be chastised, but its still a game....not like unplugging someones life support system.
Sometimes its a Coach, sometimes its a nutso parent (guilty)...chemistry between kids, chemistry between parents but most times its just a difference in goals, expectations etc...

Nowhere is it written, at least I cant find it...That an agreement with a team is a lifelong, cradle to grave, inseparable event
Its takes 2 to Tango...if one party isn't happy or both, IMHO its time to find a new dancing partner.

........and this coming from the famous player stealing Cyclone coach. What it all boils down to is that all players dont mesh with different coaches styles (OR) other players abilities. In travel ball, there is NO CONTRACT PERIOD! If you are unhappy with your daughters playing time or coaching style= LEAVE! What happens is that parents know their players ability from the begining of joing a team and try to make excuses for their child and blame the coach or other players they don't get along with. Do you think High School and College coaches arent rough on their players and demand excellence from them? Stop babying your child and place them back into rec ball if TB is too much pressure for your child. Guess what? Life is filled with PRESSURE, so teach them now and make it easier on the next coach that will sculpt your child into tomorrow's player. Perspective from a coach!!

We all tend to see things through the prism of our own experiences and point of view. Truth is sometimes it's one thing and sometimes it's another and more often its a fuzzy blend of more than one fuzzy factor. Good thing about travel is, if you don't fit one place, maybe you will another.

Currently on a team that promised to keep a "full schedule". In reality, practice is canceled as much as it is actual held. Friendlies and tourneys are canceled at about the same rate. Then they wonder why the girls are not doing well. If the girls perform poorly on most teams they get replaced. Shouldn't the coaches run the same risk? Some coaches tell you what you want to hear to get you to commit. Others just don't live up to what they think they are. If your team is not as serious as was promised why shouldn't you look for a better fit. Replacing bad fits needs to be a 2 way street to keep it fare. You know most coaches won't hesitate. Honestly its not like we want to pay uniform fees a second time  But a bad fit is a bad fit!
