Distance from plate?

What's on your mind?

by Pale Rider » Sun Oct 19, 2014 7:26 am

Whats the best method to decide what distance from the plate a batter should be?...

My beloved expensive tax deduction has batting snakes loose in her head...

Just me. I don't know but used common sense for dd and for the most part she has stuck with it.
She stands with her body splitting the facade of the plate. Where blue is suppose to call it.
She drags her bat in the dirt on the opposing side of plate. To be sure to reach outside pitch.
She does not scoot or shuffle back from that stance, if swinging away.
If she is back in box a step and half she is slapping.
So depending on bat size and arm length will depend on feet distance to plate.

Never understood moving batters around in box in regards to pitchers speed.
Either wait on it or be ready for it, but hold your ground, it is the comfort ground.

If in a slump or trending down, go back to what always worked in past. Basics.

True story.

I was at a showcase a few years ago and I was standing behind the backstop with a female college coach talking about my pitcher. We were playing a New York travel team and the blue was calling the really outside pitch a strike. The NY coach obviously frustrated at the blue and his player yelled out from the dugout, with a thick NJ accent to take the outside pitch away and position "Get nuts over the plate!" to the batter. The college coach and I turned to each other with a "did you just hear that" look, she quickly got embarrassed. A clear example that weird baseball phraseology is really weird in softball

Every time I see the college coach I ask her if she has yet used "the line" in coaching and we break out in laughter.
Thanks NY.

I don't know why I shared that story, but when I saw the topic.......well.....

Come on Pale Rider, you should know by now that dads don't know anything. Just ask my DD.

Even my wife tells people that I am a good coach, but when it comes to giving her instruction I don't know crap. It's in the genes.

One of the methods I've seen is laying the bat on the ground with the tip at the opposite edge of the plate, and the toe of the lead foot at the knob. With a 32" bat, this puts the batter's toe at 9" inside the line of the batter's box.
