Disrespectful and thoughtless comment. Just goes to show that just because you were hired to coach at a high level doesn't mean you are a person of high character.

I'll bet this coach didn't use the word "weenie" during their interview.

Holy &^%$...Sams a HS Coach?...mine would be playing volleyball if she went there
...explains a lot...

Lets just say, unless your kid plays on his team in the PAC 12
...your fav PAC 12 team came in behind him...

Most College Coaches don't give a flying sack of Sam about HS ball...Im sure some areas DO enjoy the luxury of having programs worthy of a 'look'...
MOST States HS ball is REC ball with nice uniforms...Is it all bad?...NO, Is it all good? NO!!!!
Can, but aint gonna (no reason cause you aren't willing to listen) give you a personal example of a GREAT HS program, with a Coach who is great... and one not so much...

As far as parents no controlling HS ball...Thats BS...Its a freaking popularity, GLM contest in some places...as far as coaching?...Some folks spend hard earned money for GREAT instruction...and a coach...some who never played ball period...Wanna change that kids mechanics?...Again, some are GREAT coaches...Some do it because the golf job was taken...
Again, You cant base your opinion of HS ball solely on your kids situation...

SEC pitcher I know...Has her HS listed at old school....NEVER played HS ball...2015 roster on TN not listed...But her school wont be...

Its so awesome to be criticized by someone, whose softball knowledge can easily fit inside a thimble. Thank you for your sage advice.

I disagree with the red flag comment... College coaches if presented with a plan absolutely go along with it. This year only I know of 3 of the top 10 in the Top 100 which do not play HS ball. It is becoming more common with recruits.

Yes I agree with the experience... Have to consider life is not about HS and it shouldn't be. Their experience in College is far more valuable and if they are prepared when they get there even better.

An earlier comment made about real games being good. Again, not true. Some HS ball is bad and so is the pitching and so are their team mates. No softball is better than bad softball. Any good coach would agree with that. Travel ball provides plenty of games to satisfy the games played issue.

You write like a person that thinks they have knowledge because they have read an article or two, but have no skin in the game.

Myself and many on this board have been through the softball grind and the OP wants to hear from our experience. Understand my experience is from a SoCal perspective.

Regarding the red flag, you would be surprised. I have met hundreds of college coaches over the years and I am friends with many. Every once in a while I will get a call or run into certain coaches at showcases and they have asked questions about players I may know. They may have asked questions like, why (a reason) a player is not playing HS ball, is it because of the parents? Or is it because they think they are too good for the HS team? Or they think the coach is an idiot? is it academics? What have you heard? All red flags in the view of some, not all, college coaches, some don't want this mentality on their team, they want team players. It may or may not effect an offer, but when a coach has 5 potential players for 1 position, they are looking for reasons to disqualify the other 4.

Go to any college roster bio page on any college softball website, and they have a whole paragraph on high school accolades, records set, awards, ALL CIF, ALL League, ect. They love and eat up those stats. Funny how there is a perception that HS does not matter. There may be a sentence or two on travel ball.

I don't think my DD would trade her HS experience for anything and it was very far from being perfect. She has friends from travel and HS softball, but the ones she is still in contact with are from her HS team even though they are playing ball throughout the country, they have remained very close. I think travel ball friends are like friends you make at work, close but not the same.

Not playing HS ball because the goal is to play college ball is very shortsighted. I believe you should play for today, every day, there is no guarantee for tomorrow. My DD was fortunate enough to be on varsity and start all four years in HS and play in a competitive league. It is tough for a freshman in HS not be intimidated by the upperclassmen. This social experience has come in handy in college. Think politics are bad in HS, college ball is no different, get over it and learn to survive.

Don't underestimate that HS letter and the wearing of the letterman jacket. Or the local paper doing write-ups on the team. Or her or her teammates being interviewed and quoted in the paper. Great life experiences. DD has a nice scrapbook of articles and box scores of her HS years. Irreplaceable memories in later life.

Would a stud baseball player skipping HS ball for the sake of his college career be tolerated by the local community?

59Invicta you & your DD can do what you like, but for the sake of your DD don't listen to tjbd ....who can best be described by Oscar Wilde: “What is a cynic? A man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing. And a sentimentalist, my dear Darlington, is a man who sees an absurd value in everything, and doesn't know the market place of any single thing.” unless of course your a gambler & believe in longshots & that you'll win powerball any day now.

Instead, go reread the last 2 pages from intelligent, qualified parents who've both been there & taken kids there.

tjbd my comeback to you is another O. Wilde quote "The only thing that ever consoles man for the stupid things he does is the praise he always gives himself for doing them."

I appreciate the level of thought, and even a little blood, sweat and tears, that I see in the posts on this thread. I have read every post - the cynical, the hopeful, and the sentimental, and I can take something from each one. I thank all of you for sharing your experiences. I will have a lot of excellent points to present to my DD, when discussing this and reaching a final decision. I think hearing how she responds to many of the excellent points that have been raised will help me know if her decision is a sound one, and if it is, I will probably let her make the decision. Great opportunity to pull away as a parent and let her try out those wings I've been crafting for so many years ;)

If it turns out to be a bad decision, she is only a freshman, and we are lucky in that the HS coach is a good guy who doesn't need to take anything from the kids, and he won't hold it against her if she doesn't play as a freshman.

Sam...let's end this before I have a huge gas bill...let's just say if we took your success in softball and turned it into latex it wouldn't make a rubber for a flea...
