8U travel teams?

What's on your mind?

by artomatic » Fri Jul 25, 2014 1:01 pm

I'm seeing postings for 8U travel teams in California.
What is wrong with you people?
I guess 8U parents' money is just as good as everyone else's huh?

Now, I can see in rural areas of the country, you might have to call a team "travel, as they have to travel to other towns to play teams. But in California, how about keeping them in a local rec league at least until they know how to spell their name.
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

WARNING: Link is not intended for any 8U players! (Who might be perusing HeyBucket because their parents were dumb enough to put them into travel ball)

Hey Hey Arto, these 8 yr olds NEED to learn how to be competitive. They need to learn what it's like to make a commitment & stick to it no matter how bad the coaching is or how much playing time they get! They will learn life skills without ice cream after games. They must supplement their 6 hour sat & Sunday practices (when not playing up at friendlies & traveling to tourneys) with twice weekly weight training & endurance sessions as well as take fielding & batting lessons. They must learn to play through pain & dammit Sam all pitchers will pitch as much as the coach instructs them too. These 8U tams will be year round, they have to be just to compete against the best, on the best fields so that they too can be the best (before they burnout at 11 or like 75% of the other kids who play softball quit at 13).

How else will they get verballed by a coach @ 13 or 14 that might be dead, retired or fired by the time they matriculate?

SoCal is falling behind other areas of the country. A proud grandpa was posting some rules questions (OBS/INT) on another board. The play(s) occurred during the championship game at 11:30pm with a possible 'If' game after that. BTW, this was for 6U travel in the OK/AR area.

I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words.

I was going to post a smart-ass response, but in all seriousness - my younger DD [u]hated[u] 8U rec. Long story short, she was frustrated because nobody could throw or catch. There are certain basic elements that need to be in place for the game to be a game. From that perspective, I can see the attraction to 8U "travel ball" depending on the local environment. I have also seen a couple of 8U "travel teams" and would have to say, despite my bias to the contrary, those particular teams seemed to be having a lot of fun and doing things right.

Yep...We left...Friday am at 0400...Made it to El Paso about 1800...Spent night at Ft Bliss in an Army hotel...(safely behind fences cause El Paso is way to close to Juarez) Then did the 1100 mile leg (sucks) home...Got here about midnight Sat.

Humidity smacked me around some yesterday mowing because it had rained almost everyday and my yard looked like the Serengeti exhibit at Busch Gardens...
Hung around at your game some Thursday afternoon, was gonna let mine meet your pitcher...But I got the evil eye from the Coach I PO'ed in Colorado about being kin to Numerouno and we left... :D

REALLY enjoyed being out there with all the Bucketeers I met...I had a blast...
Learned a lot about how the sport really works...'the game within the game' sort of...
PLUS the new Waterpark thing at Cerritas

Lord willing, to quote the Terminator..."I'll be back"
