Hitting advice

What's on your mind?

When she swings, my kid (12-year-old) has gotten into the habit of turning her hips too fast, getting them turned before her hands come around with the bat. Any of you gurus out there know of an exercise/drill to help correct this? Thanks.

How do you know she is clearing her hips too fast?

If I had to guess I would say her timing is off.

Tee work is always the best tool for tweaking mechanics. I would have her swing the bat off the tee. Have her open her hips after contact as she extends the bat through the zone. She can break down her swing in steps or practice it at a slow speed and work her way into a faster/full swing.

My daughter ran into that problem at that age. She was hitting the ball inside out. Which means inside pitches were being hit oppo.

She picked up this tip from Coach Kelly I Perez at a UCLA camp.

I guess we did get something out of the $500 camp ;)

Good luck to your daughter!

A couple coaches/friends have noticed it.

Thanks a lot for the tips. Gonna try it out for sure.

I can't recommend checking out teacherman's hitting illustrated site enough. The highest level swing pattern is taught there.

Look at all these hitting clips. Compare them to your thoughts about hitting and let's see what kind of questions you come up with.

Haven't spent much time on the net lately. Hope including the link isn't an issue.

Lench,

Do these hips get turned before her hands come around with the bat?

Thanks for the input!

Mark H., seems like those hips are leading the way a bit, and she still smashes it. But they are also very strong looking hips that are generating major force. My kid is definitely not the possessor of a big, powerful lower half. She's muscular and strong, but thin. I'll be checking things out, though. I've gotten many great leads here. Thanks, again!
