High School Stats

What's on your mind?

by jtat32 » Thu May 08, 2014 1:08 am

Was just looking at the XXXXX XXXXXX stat leaders and noticed that one team owned the top five spots for B.A. They are .946, .917, .895, .882, and .778. All have a reasonable # of plate appearances. Taking a look at the school's top 9 batters by plate appearances, the lowest BA in that group is .517. How can they be averaging less than 10 runs a game, and how can they be only 8-6?

Its HS stats Hombre'...Use Obamacare math...If you like your stats...you can KEEP your stats...
Seen whole seasons pass on teams on HS stats...no ROE's, FC's...etc...

As PR said- they are HS stats. You can look at books kept by either team in a game and think you were looking at a different game :D

The fact that they were HS stats is irrelevant. The same thing happens in TB. You don't know how many kids we see that hit .500 in TB, but couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat in HS games.

There are two common problems with HS stats. The first is the intentional misreprentation leading to high batting averages, low error rates and ERAs ectera.

The second is a common lack of knowledge regarding basic scoring rules and techniques. I have no problem with the "close calls" on scoring decisions but when people have no idea what they are doing, we should not be surprized by the reuslts they produce. All we can do is train the folks we ask to score our games.

What McGee said, very well stated.

I don't even bother turning in stats anymore. When you see the stats that do get reported, it's a joke. We try to follow NCAA scoring guidelines, am I guilty of telling the book to give a batter the benefit of the doubt from time to time, yes.

Stats are like home to first times, you can fudge them all you want, but at some point the kid is going to have to live up to their billing, are you being fair to the kid?

Well...they all have $350 bats and hitting coaches....and they practice 6 hours on Sundays with their TB icons....and they play meaningless games all year long.....it could be the HS coaching.....or something else.
