I need a little help with JC transfer question.

What's on your mind?

Hi Heybucket family,

A friend of mine has a daughter who is playing softball at a local junior college.
This is her first year there and she wants to transfer to a 4 year college.
Her mother ask me if I could help them. However is been over 8 years since my
daughter graduated from high school and she went straight to a 4 year university.

When I asked the player if she went to her counselor for information, she gave me the pamphlets her the counselor gave her. (wth?) I'm pretty sure she needed more guidance than that. To be fair she's very respectful of adults and never questions them. She might not have spoke up when she realized that pamphlets were not what she needed.

The pamphlets were just basic information on different schools. It did not contain what a
what a student athlete would need to be eligible to transfer there and play. Which
is why she went to the counselor.

I remember hearing something about, the rules changing, Something like you have to get your AA first if you want to transfer to a D1 maybe even a D2?

Can someone tell me where I can tell this family to find this information themselves so they can make an informed decision? Even better, tell me the exact, link where it's stated?

I don't want to be responsible for giving them the wrong information. But I do want to help them find the resources they need to find out everything they want to know. So any help would be appreciated! I know this board has some pretty smart people on it and a lot of you have kept up with all the rule changes concerning NCAA. Can you help?

I think this thread has a lot of information.
http://www.athleticscholarships.net/jun ... er-2-4.htm
JC is quite a bit different than D1 to D1. Some complex calcuation aobut if you are qualifying or non-qualifying. Based on your description your friend appears to be a non-qualifier. They list these as requirements for non-qualifying atheletes to be able to play your first year:

    Attend the two-year college full-time for at least three semesters or four quarters;
    Achieve a cumulative GPA of at least 2.000;
    Graduate from the two-year college; and
    Have at least 48 transferable credit hours at a semester school or 72 transferable credit hours at a quarter school, including six semester hours or eight quarter hours of English and three semester hours or four quarter hours of math.

Also, do not forget to look for applicable exceptions. http://www.athleticscholarships.net/ncaa-transfer-exceptions.htm They can definitely be your least hassle way of transferring without having to sit out.

I would think that JC coaches would be quick to sign releases. Most of the above rules and exceptions are necessary when you are in a situation where coach will not release you. One of the biggest selling points for athletes to go to a JC is "Come to my JC and I will tune you up and get you ready to take one of those open spots at a D1." If they are not signing off on transfers, that whole story unravels.

I would have to think, if I were, a JC coach, getting a kid to actually make that jump to D1 would be huge feather in my cap. Does anyone know why a JC coach would not sign off on a transfer request?

Here are some other threads where they have discussed transfer situations that are relevant to your inquiry.
