Quality JUCO Programs

What's on your mind?

by Fuddrules » Mon Mar 04, 2013 12:15 pm

Here are the current rankings:

Div. 1
http://www.njcaa.org/sports_polls.cfm?c ... =1&slid=14

Div. 2
http://www.njcaa.org/sports_polls.cfm?c ... =2&slid=14

A lot of these programs are repeats in the polls year after year. They also send quite a few players to 4-year colleges upon graduation.

I see many of the girls going to smaller D-1 schools that they might have overlooked when in the recruiting process. Jucos here have money to spend..just not as many scholarships as a D1.
It can be a good start especially if the kid needs some transition time to become a successful student athlete.

good luck to your kid

Certainly heard good things about those two jucos, also Coach D at Galveston Junior College - is a good strong coach and is good at getting his graduates seen. FT, I have heard that jucos have as many or more scholarships as D1 - what have you heard ?

Learn something new every day. My bad, I thought Juco's only had 12 scholarships.

Bubba, I know kids that went to Blinn and Temple. Some went to mid major D1s , one went to a major D1, others quit after two years. The programs and the schools are good, the rest depends on the kid. Contrary to other post, they have plenty of scholarships to give. see below:

The NJCAA allows 24 scholarships per school. These are full-ride but individual schools can offer partial grants in aid. Top players tend to receive the best offers. There are 148 division 1 and 122 division 11 colleges that offer financial aid. Each school can only offer 24 scholarships in total, unlike the NCAA they cannot offer a larger number of at a lower percentage.

Keep in mind they don't all give 24, since they generally don't carry that many players. One of the schools mentioned above gives 18. That is all the coach want to carry.

Here is the NJCAA website.

http://www.njcaa.org/colleges.cfm

If your DD wants to play D1 ball while getting her education, this is a viable stepping stone. Just keep in mind, her first objective should be her education. If she has a chance to walk on (coach says she is on the team, but doesn't have any money to give) at the school she wants to attend, then it is likely worth pursuing, especially if she has the academics and test grades to get some academic money. If she has the talent to go to a jucco, then D1, then she has the talent to walk on to a D1 and contribute.

Good luck to your DD.

My DD chose to go the JUCO path. She had offers here in California at some DII schools, but really wanted to find a school that was a good fit academically and aligned to her future goals. She opted to go to a JUCO in Alabama. Everything was paid for but room and board. This has cost us about $1600 a semester or $400 a month. She has been there for one year and I don't think she has every regretted her decision. She is getting lots of playing time, has made great friends, and is on track to earn her degree in two years. With California Schools so impacted, the idea of earning a two year degree in two years really seems far fetched. She has had opportunities to play fall games against SEC schools and other DI, DII schools in the area. She is getting to make first hand contact with many coaches at four year programs in a region that she had not had much prior exposure.

The school she is attending is Marion Military Institute and it has been a great fit for my DD. This school is definitely not for everyone, but what school is. Coach Guthrie does a great job of getting to major California and Texas showcases, and has several players from CA and TX on his roster every year. There are only four sophomores on this year's team and they have all committed to four year schools next year.

I strongly encourage players to consider alternatives such as the JUCO schools.
