Grade - No. Pupils - Avg. mph - top 10 Avg
5 60 39.32 45.7
6 87 43.23 51.60
7 95 47.08 58.00
8 117 50.37 62.20
9 59 51.20 58.30
10 63 52.56 61.50
11 27 56.67 60.90
12 28 58.00 62.00

Here is a list from a few years back from a pitching school, I dont remember which one, but they put out this list.

Spaz, et al, you know what we need, a F.A.Q. list so we could point newbies at the questions that are frequently asked and we wouldn't have to waste band width on them, they are important questions, but like what does DD mean and so on, asked more than annually. This guy is ahead of the game but anyway, my 2 cents.

Actually, the FAQ should say (among other things, like what Arto was really thinking when he wrote "dammit") that this is the wrong place for realistic evaluations, because there are just too many "toppers" here - anything your kid can do, their kid can top it. :o
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

A, i looked at this as something I wanted to know when my pitching kid was 8 or 9 and we were setting some target goals, for us, the list was really helpful. I didnt really care that that the super studs were throwing 65 at 12, I just wanted some numbers that were real at one time.

Average: 38-42mph
Good: 45
Phenom: 50+

I see a lot of good/great/borderline phenoms, speed-wise who I fully expect to flame out and either quit pitching or become mediocre as they age up. A big kid born in January who can throw an 11" ball really hard from 35' isn't necessarily a great pitcher. They'll learn soon enough that they can't just get by with heat and crappy mechanics.

As a generic guideline, take ANY speed number from ANYONE, including a pitching school, especially a pitching school, and deduct 8-10% (at least).

Second, those that claim their 14 year old is throwing mid-60's need to change their radar gun from kph to mph.

Third, speed is an "ok" attribute. Even a good one. Speed without hitting spots AND... AND having movement is called a "batting practice". What goes in fast goes out fast.

At 10's if your hitting high 40's and especial 50's for strikes MOST players wont touch you. You are the stud.
That will change quick after 10's though.
If you show no mercy... you deserve no mercy!

Speed isn't all that. Our slowest pitcher cleaned house this weekend. Hit your spots.
