Realistic pitching speeds

What's on your mind?

by bring'nheat » Mon Jan 25, 2010 11:12 pm

Ok, I have heard and read several posts regarding pitching speeds. Can someone please tell me REALISTICALLY(not daddys claim) what pitches, speeds & movement pitchers have in the 12, 14, 16 & 18's. 'A' ball, no 'B' ball please.

If you are looking for the trus pitching speed of any one particular kid, it's simple....Ask her Dad or Mom and then substract at least 5 mph.....

After reading all the posts regarding pitching speeds over the last several months on this site most people are full of poo.....JMHO

The best at Nationals is top end, average is low end..
10U- 45mph to 50mph
12U- 52mph to 60mph
14U- 55mph to 64mph

My kid isn't a pitcher but a catcher

My kid is 15 in 18u. I really don't know what her speed is. Seems to be pretty decent. She has learned curve, drop curve, off speed curve, change, screw, rise, drop and learning the off speed screw. I say she has learned those pitches because not all of them seem to work every game.

That is another one, parents say their kid has 8 pitches and they work all the time. NOT!!! Hell, my kid can't even throw a fast ball anymore. At least not with any speed.

The top level teams I can see this in, P's 1-3. Out of 10+ travel ball programs in the 12U, 2-3 P's throw in that range.(We are talking 30+ pitchers) in my area.
Then in 14U, there is about 10 travel teams as well an 3-5 P's throw in that range as well.
That ratio might be low for the power regions of fastpitch softball, but in all with how many teams those regions have and how many P's, per team. It might come out to be close..

If she isn't in the high 50's or low 60's by 2nd yr 12u with 8 pitches, you'd better think about buying her an outfielder's glove. But of course, that's for "C" ball. Add 5mph and two additional pitches for "B", and another 5mph and 3 additional for "A", respectively.

I would say this is a pretty good range, with top end definitely being Nationals Worthy, and I have seen several "A" caliber teams with less low end speed than this. You can see the occasional low end at Nationals but they go out very early.

In So Cal saw most of the top teams in 12's during the the fall and the average speed seems to be about 50 to 55 mph. There might be 2 or 3 girls who throw harder, but then control becomes a issue.

I would agree with that....

There must be roughly 300+ travel 12U pitchers that played in the Fall.....I would say that out of that group maybe 5 or 6 girls REALLY throw 56+ consistently and nobody throws as hard as the 2 kids from last year's 96's....The one from Bomb Squad and the one from Power Surge.....There wasn't a pitcher on any team this past Fall that threw like those 2 kids did...I do think there are a couple girls that can get there though....I think there are 3 or 4 girls from the TOP 10 teams that MAY reach that level but we'll see....

Consistency is the key...I hear so many people say my kid throws (Fill in the blank)....Throwing a pitch 3 or 4 times out of 100 at a lesson doesn't mean you THROW that speed.....Figure it out during a game if it's that important.....Do 4 or 5 innings and chart it....Then you'll know where she's at....

I think you will agree that we saw MANY very good pitchers in 12's this Fall and they didn't all throw 56+.....Many of those kids are very good pitchers and are just now coming into their own and will grow from here and gain strength....
