My DD is being taught by her HS team how to crow hop which she learned in rec ball a long time ago. Her TB team teaches a more effective way to drive off your back leg with your momentum going forward and I'm seeing this method being used more and more. So my DD asked if HS coach if there was a different way other than crow hop and she blew up and is now on the team sh*t list. Any idea's?

What your TB coach is teaching her for the outfield is called the drive step. But if she were a pitcher we would call it a re-plant

I am sorry that the coach felt the need to blow up over a simple question.

Yes, with most beginner types, I would teach them to crow hop. If you had another effective way to throw, I wouldn't care if you hopped, jumped and did a cart wheel.

Hopefully, your DD will be able to just play her game and be an awesome outfielder.

Perhaps the coach has a reason that she prefers a crow hop, but to blow up at a player that asks a simple question is unacceptable.

Have your DD keep working on her distance throws. At Uof AZ. the outfielders warm up throwing from left field fence to right field, prior to the games. I like a throwing program called Jaeger Sports. I will see if it mentions crow hop.

IMO, it all depends on how you are fielding the ball. If your running up to field a grounder and all your momentum is going forward then a crow hop would be ideal, if used correctly! If your camped out under a high fly ball, then a little quick step throw off a strong back foot is the way to go.

My point exactly, she could have told her that she can throw however she wants on her TB team but on this team you will crow hop and that would be acceptable end of discussion.

Normally I'd agree with you 100%.....but with the utter disregard exhibeted by so many on this board regarding HS teams and their coaches I gotta wonder if this instance isn't just a repercussion of that. Not saying you or your daughter have contributed to the coaches reaction directly.....but I know that were I in position where every decision, technique, etc I attempted to instill in my players was met with "but my TB coach says...", sooner or later I'm going to look to set an example.

Coach, believe me that my DD never uses her TB team as a reference and to be honest with you the coach doesn't even know me or my wife because we don't want to be one of those parents in the coaches ear all of the time. After talking to my DD this weekend she told me that one of the older girls told her she picks out a couple of girls out the bunch and rides them all season. Now we know it's going to be a rough season, and she crow hops when she throws from the outfield too. :D

Well then. That could be a good thing. Our coach uses a similar technique.
He typically torments the players he sees as having the most potential.
My daughter was the only freshmen on the team last year and he rode her harder then anyone else.
When a weaker upperclasmen would make a bonehead mistake hed quietly correct her on the side. But if my daughter made a less agregious error, hed let her have it there and then for all to hear.
Meanwhile it looks as though she'll be named co-captain as a sophmore this year.
I've always told her to roll with it. If he didn't think she could handle it, he wouldn't waste his time.
Best of luck to you and your DD. I know how hard it can be to hold your tongue at times.
