I always keep my pointer finger outside of the glove. I am a 1st baseman. When catching on the bucket, still with a mitt, my pointer finger can still get "rung up" a bit, by a fast pitcher. In 40 years, I have never dug my pointer finger into the ground. My mitt has the little holster for the finger.

I like hearing different ideas though, so if a kid is doing something a bit different, I don't insist on changing her. Amy
